- Patrons must be registered borrowers of a Main Library Alliance member library in order to place a hold.
- Residents of Lambertville and Milford Borough may not make requests through the Hunterdon County Library unless they have purchased a non-resident card.
- All Inter-Library Loan requests made by Flemington Borough patrons must originate from Flemington Free Public Library.
Items owned by the Hunterdon County Library:
- Patrons may have a total of twenty-five (25) requests at any one time, which includes holds with a status of On Waiting List, In Process, or Inactive, but does not include holds with a status of En Route or Waiting for Pickup. Temporary and Open Borrower patrons may not place holds.
- Patrons may place their own holds using the online catalog or they may submit a request through the library.
- Requests will be taken for most library traditional materials except for periodicals.
- Requests are processed by date of submission.
- If the supply of materials is such that it cannot meet immediate demand, then items will fill request for patrons from the same library first (i.e. HCL cardholders will receive HCL items before other Main cardholders).
- Patrons will be notified by phone, email, or text when an item arrives at the specific location.
- Items will be held at the pick-up library for five operating days.
- Patrons wishing to pick up items on hold for another patron must present the card of that patron or by declaration of "authorized for pickup" status through the patron's account.
- Book Club Kits are handled through a separate, though connected, system and requests and reservations are managed by the HQ Community Library Services Department.
Items not owned by the Hunterdon County Library:
- Patrons are limited to 3 Inter-library loan (ILL) requests per day and a total of 10 active requests.
- All potential requests must first go through a thorough search of the catalog to verify that the item is not owned and/or able to be borrowed by any Main Library Alliance libraries.
- Requests received for items not owned by the Hunterdon County Library will be forwarded to the appropriate department for consideration for purchase.
- Patrons can place their own requests through the library’s webform or by contacting Headquarters or North County Branch Community Library Services Departments.
- ILL can be used to request physical materials as well as articles that cannot be accessed through library databases.
- When holds are made available, automated holds notices are dispersed daily by Main via email, text, or system phone call.
- Items can be borrowed from and returned to any HCL branch
- Books and audiobooks may be borrowed for up to 28 days, and media can be borrowed for up to 14 days. There are no automatic renewals for ILL materials; any requests for renewal must be made with the owning library by ILL staff.
