Learn how to use a pottery wheel at the library! Everyone using the wheel needs to be certified by attending an appointment with a Makerspace Staff member. During the appointment you'll become familiar with our procedures for recycling clay, cleaning after using the wheel and reserving the pottery wheel during open hours. Staff can provide an introductory lesson covering wedging and getting started with wheel throwing if you are new to the pottery wheel during this appointment.
The library can provide two pounds of clay for your first appointment, additional clay costs $5/pound and includes glazing and firing. Clay and glazes used must be sourced from the library; no outside clay or glazes are permitted.
Multiple visits are needed to finish a piece on the wheel. Most wheel thrown objects need to be trimmed approxiametly a week after they are thrown (second visit). Then are glazed after a bisque firing (third visit). Then are complete after the glaze firing (4th visit to pickup).
Please bring an old towel to the appointment to cover your lap and wipe your hands on during wheel throwing. Expect to get some clay on your clothing and shoes. Closed toed shoes are required in the makerspace.
